EK
BALAM - 'Black Jaguar', Terminal Classic Period,
Northern Yucatan, Mexico |
||
| For
many years, Ek Balam had little to show of its magnificence; but thanks
to INAH (Instituto Nacional de Antropologia y Historia) and dedicated archeologists,
a remarkable city has been recovered over the past few years. The site boasts
two cenotes, a ballcourt, several stelae, an observatory and a Puuc style
archway. In the very center, there are three large pyramid structures with Peten style architecture, the largest of which is known as "The Acropolis." It was built by the ruler Ukil-Kan-Lek-Tok during the Terminal Classic Period, according to glyphic inscriptions on his tomb, and it is quite possibly one of the tallest structures in the Yucatan, rising to a height of almost 100 feet. The Acropolis has several rooms facing into the plaza and a variety of carvings and stucco elements about two-thirds of the way up (see illustration) the pyramid. Its most remarkable feature, however, is an incredible restored monster mouth entranceway or maw into the underworld, replete with fangs. For those more adventurous, a climb to the very top will offer a superb vista of the lowland jungle below and on a clear day, along with a good pair of goggles, one can possibly see the pyramids of Coba many miles away to the southeast. My drawing was sketched in 2002 and I am certain that ongoing archeological excavation will reveal much more of this splendid site. There is no food service at this site and as always on any of these treks, a bottle of water is a must. |
