KABAH
- Terminal Classic Period (Puuc Style), West Central Yucatan
|
Kabah lies along Yucatan's "Ruta Maya", some 20 minutes south of Uxmal along highway 261. Most of the main buildings are visible on the east side of the road and a large restored archway lies to the west. The core of the site is easily accessible, with most of the structures still standing. Kabahs main building is known as the Codz-Poop ("Coiled Mat"), or Palace of the Masks. The entire west side of this structure is decorated in Chac Masks and the doorway entrance is depicted in my illustration. This long building, constructed in the Classic Puuc Mosaic Style, also has a stepped fret roof comb that was restored in the early 1990's. Beyond the Codz-Poop lies the Palace and several other structures, some not quite restored but worth visiting for their architectural elements. Across the road on the west side, is a restored archway that was once the beginning of a "sacbe" that leads all the way to Uxmal. The very large mound lying to the right of the archway is actually a massive unrestored pyramid. I shall post an illustration I have done of the Arch in the near future. From Kabah, you may continue along the road southeastward to the next noteworthy site of Sayil; or you can head south, past Bolonchen, to the site of Santa Rosa Xtampac (Xtampak). |
